Happy Birthday Christopher Mast

Happy Birthday Christopher Mast

Christopher Mast just turned 41. Today. Or Yesterday. Actually I think his birthday is already over in Australia, but is still happening in the US. (Timezones are confusing!)

On his NotChristopherMast YouTube channel he talked with dread at the prospect of turning 41, before wryly instructing his viewers to at least read his blog so he could stay relevant!

Mast is one of the most intriguing characters I’ve come across. A talented musician, he rose to fame notoriety on YouTube by tackling topics others wouldn’t touch with a bargepole! While some might squirm at the idea of controversy, he seems to revel in it. He marked the passing of fellow YouTuber Roger/TheBoringDispatcher by making a parody video insisting he actually faked his death (a video that Mast insists to this day Roger would’ve appreciated the humour behind). He unapologetically talked about sex, and was surely influential in the slew of 2Girls1Cup reaction videos that littered the internet landscape.

Nutcheese once likened Mast to a little brother she loved to poke with a stick. He has a mischievous mind. He polarises audiences; either you’ll love him or hate him.

Have you ever wondered about the origins of the “Watch JohnOfJordan” song (penned by Mast)? It sounds creepy, indeed, it is supposed to sound creepy! Mast took a couple of throwaway lines from this video and turned it into a hilarious premise!

Originally he arrived at YouTube with the intention to promote his music. A talented Indie musician, Mast’s three albums stand in stark contrast with his YouTube presence. How exactly the guitarist and singer who wanted to “sing a lullabye to someone every night” morphed into “such a whore” is anyone’s guess!

I genuinely think you would be hard pressed to find anyone with nearly as colourful a career as Christopher Mast. Happy Birthday Christopher. May you continue to drive people nuts for decades to come!

People you love will turn their backs on you
You’ll lose your hair, your teeth
Your knife will fall out of its sheath
But you still don’t want to leave before the end of the movie
You still don’t want to leave before the end of the show

- “Hidden Song #2,” Christopher Mast
(From the album ‘Naked Monsters’)

  1. Wow! Thanks John. I should note that the lyrics you’re quoting aren’t mine… I wish they were. They were written by John McCrea of Cake. The song is called “End of the Movie.” Here’s his version made into a really cool video by some students:

  2. Christopher is a great guy. I’ve really enjoyed the past year getting to know him better. Meeting him in San Francisco was a great treat.

  3. Great birthday tribute to an awesome guy! o(^-^)o
