Can You Heal Your Life?

Can You Heal Your Life?

As much as I consider myself a writer, I struggle to put into words how I’ve been feeling lately. I’d like to tell you that I’ve become really angry and fed up with things and [other] people, though I don’t really think that is it entirely. Which is to say I don’t think that’s where the feelings really originate.

I reached a point during the day when I couldn’t bring myself to look at the computer, not even be in my room. I slunk out to the lounge room and switched on tv.

I turned the channels and was surprised to find the “You Can Heal Your Life” movie starting. For the unaware, “You Can Heal Your Life” is a book by Louise L. Hay. The movie is surely Hay House Publishing’s response to “The Secret.” Interestingly at least one of the speakers in this movie was also in “The Secret.” Indeed the themes are identical.

The movie itself was perhaps slightly less produced than “The Secret.” This, coupled with the genuine quality of the speakers, made it a more satisfying experience.

One thing that Louise Hay said really struck a chord with me.

“… realising that you don’t love yourself. That most people don’t. Most people feel they’re not good enough, they haven’t done it right, they won’t do it right, they’ll never be enough. And they’re definitely not lovable.”

I realised in that moment that I didn’t resent the person who been making demands of me that afternoon. I just genuinely felt that nothing I had done for him to that point had been good enough; that, in effect, I wasn’t good enough.

I wasn’t really frustrated with a certain video site, I just found myself continually comparing statistical information with that of my friends. The truth is they have done some really amazing things and their following represents this. My “success” isn’t bad, I am thankful for what I have. Comparatively, though, it is modest.

Again, I take this personally. It is because I’m not good enough. Its because I’m not interesting enough. Not good looking enough. Not confident enough.

What if (as Hay suggests) all my problems stemmed from a more fundamental issue?

  1. I think you’re good enough, but I do understand where you’re coming from regarding the confidence factor. From time to time, everybody needs more confidence, even the best of us.

  4. I remember reading Hay’s book back in 2001. I thought it was insightful at the time and found it useful to treat people of a New Age mentality. There are various systems of “self healing” and I always seem to see the same “experts” in the film versions.
