I think it would be better just for producers of music to produce music… and for consumers of music just to consume music. That is, make the music you want to make, and buy the music you want to listen to. Every second person seems so preoccupied with what they apparently dislike, which blows my mind. (I can only think that they enjoy complaining about music more than they dislike listening to it).
Technological advancements (especially digital recording equipment) have made it easier than ever before to record music. Presently there is more music readily available – in various formats – than ever before. I am of the mind that if you cannot find music to enjoy, then you must be having trouble negotiating your way around the channels that make it available. If you look on the internet, or at local venues, or communicate with other music lovers you will be exposed to some of this music. The only way you’re going to know if you like it or not is to listen. And, of course, there are going to be times in your life when you’re going to hear things you don’t like… but like they say nothing ventured, nothing gained. Nor is a personal dislike of a particular genre or artist enough cause to disparage that person or people who like them, nor expect that person (or persons) to stop creating music.
We should be fostering a “live and let live” approach to music, so that artists and bands feel confident enough to express themselves creatively. It is the only way we can continue to enjoy the kind of diversity that has appeared in music today.
