Artefacts Of Online Life

JohnnyDurham19, also known as “Friday” of The FiveAwesomeGuys, recently made an interesting video. He acknowledged that there was a great sense of excitement and community revolving around the fans and friends of TheVlogBrothers, FiveAwesomeGirls and FiveAwesomeGuys… BUT, he noted soberly, if YouTube were to close down tomorrow there wouldn’t be a tangible piece of evidence to speak of any of the groups’ existence.

His response to this dilemma was to create a double sided card, listing all the members of the group on one side. On the opposite side of the card there was an area for each individual to sign and customise the card as they saw fit. What will become of the card is uncertain at this point, however finally there was some tangible representation of something enjoyed entirely in an electronic fashion.

It is especially awesome to receive letters, cards and parcels from online friends, who are sometimes literally on the other side of the world. I have been especially lucky I feel in this regard. Some of you may remember The YouTube Postcard which came into my possession. However I have also received some other goodies I wanted to write about.

Most recently my friend John (brojoghost) sent me a gorgeous calligraphy filled letter. When I unwrapped it I was overjoyed to find it held together with a red ribbon and a beautiful wax seal. It is surely the most gorgeous looking correspondence I have ever received.

I look forward to pouring over that more closely shortly.

The aforementioned JohnnyDurham19, one of my dearest friends and greatest sources of inspiration online, sent me a gorgeous thank you card after I sent him some JohnOfJordan wear for his birthday. We all know about his crazy MS Paint skills, but it turns out he can also draw very convincingly with a pen too. Who knew?

Awesome Indie musician and YouTube Star Christopher Mast (who wrote and recorded the “Watch JohnOfJordan” theme heard at the end of most videos) sent me a bundle of goodies when I ordered his three albums. He threw in a beautiful book of photographs of San Francisco and an intriguing collection of plastic toys: frog, lizard, vampire teeth, a slide whistle and a kazoo.

This poses some very philosophical questions… What does it mean when an Idie musician sends you a plastic kazoo?!

Have you received any goodies you’d like to tell us about? Leave a comment!
